Thrifty Thursday No. 3 : Make Your Own Seasonings!

by - 8:53 PM

Don't you hate it when you go to make tacos and find out that you don't have any taco seasoning to do the job? Me too. And I mean who wants to drop everything and run to the store to get some? Certainly not me. I'd rather have bland tacos.

Lucky for you, I've found the secret to making not only your own Taco Seasoning, but also Italian Seasoning, and Pizza Seasoning!

These babies have been life savers for me in the kitchen and my bank account! Making your own "blended" seasonings is a great way to pinch pennies, because it's likely you already have everything you need right there in your spice cabinet!

Let's go ahead and start out with that Taco Seasoning. After all, it is what gave me the idea of making my own seasonings to begin with! Shortly after Hayden and I returned from our honeymoon, I was in full-blown wife mode and I was cooking up a storm every night. We were also super poor (lol, still are) and I was trying to be resourceful. So I did some research to figure out what seasonings go in Taco Seasoning. After some experimenting, I came up with my perfect solution!

You will need:

Crushed Red Pepper
Black Pepper
Salt
Chili Powder
Ground Cumin
Oregano
Onion Powder
Garlic Powder
Paprika

The great thing about making your own seasoning is that you can add as much or as little of each ingredient as you wish! Here are the measurements I use:

1/4 tsp. Crushed Red Pepper
1 tsp. Black Pepper
1 tsp. Salt
1 Tbsp. Chili Powder
2 tsp. Ground Cumin
1/2 tsp. Oregano
1/4 tsp. Onion Powder
1/4 tsp. Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp. Paprika

Simply blend all of your ingredients...

And store them in an air-tight container!

I know, my storage vessels are so glamorous.

You can be cheap like me and use zip-lock bags or store your homemade seasonings in cute little jars like these. These ones are good too.

Next on the agenda is Italian Seasoning! Because who doesn't use this one several times a week?

Your list of ingredients:

Basil
Cilantro
Rosemary
Thyme
Marjoram
Oregano

This recipe is SUPER easy. Its just equal parts of each ingredient, so really it just depends on how much you want to make!

I just chose to use 1 Tablespoon of each.

1 Tbsp. Basil
1 Tbsp. Cilantro
1 Tbsp. Rosemary
1 Tbsp. Thyme
1 Tbsp. Marjoram
1 Tbsp. Oregano

Blend...

And store!

I can't help but laugh at myself every time I see these ghetto little baggies. So trendy.

Lastly is my personal favorite: Pizza Seasoning!!

I know its uncommon, but its such a blessing! When I asked my husband a couple of years ago (when we were just getting to know each other) what his favorite fast food restaurant was, he told me Little Caesar's. I giggled because I had never considered it as a "fast food" joint, but those Hot n' Readys sure do deliver! (Get it.. "deliver"... cause it's pizza..) Any way. Hayden said "but you have to make sure you get Zap Paks! Stuff changes lives!!" I've never been able to eat a Little Caesar's pizza without a Zap Pak since then. A Zap Pak is pretty much Taco Seasoning in pizza form. It just adds some extra ZAP to your pizza!

This pizza seasoning pretty much does the same thing! I originally came up with it because I needed some pizza sauce (Hayden and I have homemade pizza every Friday night) and didn't want to have to go to the store (are you sensing a theme here?) I had a big can of tomato sauce, so just like I did with the taco situation, I researched what seasonings went into pizza sauce, did some experimenting, and found a match!

This pizza seasoning recipe can be used to make your own sauce, add to homemade pizza dough, or to simply sprinkle over your pizza for some extra ZAP!

You will need:

Marjoram
Black Pepper
Salt
Garlic Powder
Basil
Crushed Red Pepper
Paprika
Oregano
Sugar

Again, you can change the levels of each ingredient to your liking. My choices in measurements are as follows:

1/4 tsp. Marjoram
1/2 tsp. Black Pepper
1/4 tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Garlic Powder
1/4 tsp. Basil
1/4 tsp. Crushed Red Pepper
1/2 tsp. Paprika
1/2 tsp. Oregano
1/4 tsp. Sugar

You know the drill!

Ta-da!

Just like that, you have 3 different seasonings to add to your cabinet--and it only took about 10 minutes! Impressive huh? Not to mention convenient as heck!
